Kingsland Bridge
KINGSLAND BRIDGE: Not an airfield at all, but certainly a flying site worthy of mention
Location: Near to or in Shrewsbury
Period of operation: July 1917
NOTES: To roughly quote Derrick Pratt and Mike Grant in their book ‘Wings Across the Border’, “word had somehow got around that an aerial visitation was imminent. Hundreds of people lined both banks either side of the Kingsland Bridge. Earlier in the afternoon two aircraft had landed on the nearby Shrewsbury School’s cricket field, one piloted by Capt. Collet who it seems, had entertained Shrewsbury residents to thrilling displays”.
On this occasion though he seems to have gone much further treating the spectators who were “electrified…by flying not once but some nine or ten times under Kingsland Bridge”. This it seems was the precedent for many later SHAWBURY pilots doing likewise in flying beneath the Kingsland Bridge after “passing out” having completed their initial pilot training course.
