Military users: RNAS/RAF Airship moorings for non-rigid airships (Two SS-Z ‘Sea Scout’ airships)


Location: Just NW of the A379/A374 junction on the W side of the river Plym, just ENE of Plymouth city centre

Period of operation: 1918 to 1919
 

NOTES: It appears that the RNAS were first to make mooring experiments here in March 1918 shortly before being absorbed into the RAF. This site was a Sub-Station to MULLION and situated adjacent to the racecourse. The ground-crews were billeted on the grandstand it seems.

 

This site is also recorded as being the venue for Mrs Hewlett’s flying activities in 1911. Is anything more known about this?
