Lake Down

LAKE DOWN: Military aerodrome

Aerial view in 2018

Note:  This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

Training Squadron Station and Training Depot Station

Location: Near Lake village which is about 2nm SW of Amesbury, and 2.5nm roughly W of BOSCOMBE DOWN

Period of operation: 1917 to 1919   (1924?  See below)

NOTES: The actual airfield was probably W of Lake as records say that it was 5 miles from Amesbury railway station and 6 miles from Salisbury railway station. This would seem to place it just E of the A360 and probably about 1.5nm S of the A303.

So, imagine my delight when I found that the Airfields Of Britain Conservation Trust have also placed the airfield here. They however state that the airfield remained in use until 1924.

Lake Down Airfield was just north of Druids Lodge. The Water Tower and other small buildings to the East of the A361 are all that remain. If you follow the line of the Military Railway South from Bulford - it passes the RFC Airfield at Stonehenge and it goes on to Druids Lodge.
