Lake Windermere

LAKE WINDERMERE: Civil seaplane base

Operated by: Lakes Flying Company (1912) later A.V. Roe

Activities: Pleasure flights

Regular services: Avro Civil Aviation Service (1919)

Pleasure flights: A.V. Roe

Location: COCKSHOT POINT only?

Period of operation: 1912 to 1919?

NOTES: The Lakes Flying Company frequently operated a Curtiss single float biplane named Water Hen without incident throughout 1911, a remarkable achievement in those days. It seems that the Avro Civil Aviation Service operated regular passenger services from here to the Isle of Man in 1919 using floatplanes of course.

See COCKSHOT POINT for more info.

In June 2022 a replica of the Water Hen briefly took to the air. This was followed by other flights of increased length and height.

It is hoped that it can be stationed here as a tourist attraction and flown from time to time.
