Lea airstrip
LEA: Private airstrip
Operated by: Mr Norman Haines
Location: Just E of Lea village, roughly 2nm E of Malmesbury
Runway: Mostly 02/20 490 grass (with dog-legs at both ends)
NOTES: During 2007 and 2008 Mr Haines employed me to move his Vans RV-9A G-RVNH twice - four trips in all. The first job was in May 2007 to CAMBRIDGE airport for the fitting of avionics etc. I then collected it for delivery back to LEA in November 2007, which just goes to show how long these things can take.
Later in March 2008, when it was almost finished, I delivered G-RVNH to TURWESTON for painting where a superb job was done; although in fairness I never once saw a duff paint job in all the numerous paint shops I delivered aircraft to. It was in April, barely a month later, that I delivered 'November Hotel' back to LEA for final assembly.
Mr Haines superb hangar/workshop was an exceptional example of how to go about building an aeroplane and quite a privilege to see. But this said, and I expect he would readily agree, that he did not have to work to the somewhat less generous budgets that so many other home-builders have available.
During at least a quarter of a century moving aeroplanes, I really did love discovering the very varied array of people and places which light aviation involves.
