A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom

Leagrave

Note: This map only gives a rough position within the UK. Leagrave has since been swamped by the urban development of Luton and Dunstable, a common story for so many flying sites, in England especially. However, I feel confident that some worthy person can provide a more accurate location, and, hopefully a bit more information? If so, such advice will be very welcome indeed.

LEAGRAVE: Civil private company airfield

Operated by: Hewlett & Blondeau Ltd

Manufacturing: Hewlett & Blondeau Ltd

Location: NW of junction 11 on the M1, N of A505

Period of operation: From 1914 to ?

NOTES: Listed as being a manufacturers aerodrome where their aircraft were built, and presumably, some were assembled and flight tested?

The Hewlett & Blondeau concern are quite famous for having a flying school at BROOKLANDS (SURREY) - see for extra information, and before WW1. The 'Hewlett' in the company title was Mrs Hilda B Hewlett, the first woman to gain a British Pilots License, and that was in 1911!
