LERWICK: Civil aerodrome (Also known as TINGWALL)
Note: This picture (2010) was obtained from Google Earth ©
Operated by: 1980s to today at least: Shetlands Islands Council
(1990: Construction Depot of the Shetland Islands Council )
Note: This picture is from the John Stroud Collection and was not captioned. However, with considerable assistance from my good friend Maurice Wickstead, we are both reasonably confident that this picture was probably taken fairly soon after this small regional airport opened in the 1980s. In August 2015 Peter Ward kindly contacted me to point out that this was the apron on the original 'airport' which was closed due to waterlogging problems.

NOTES: In November 2021 I was kindly contacted by Mr Graham Brown, who has this to tell us:
"I refer to Terry Clark's comment. I'm also reasonably sure that I landed light twins on a grass/heather strip called Tingwall in the late 70's - 77 I think. (Must find those logbooks!!). Do we have any more info on this strip please? Was it still EGET?"
He also adds; "Also, in the 80's, I used to pilot DHC-7s into UNST from Aberdeen with Brymon. Crosswinds and low level upset from the surrounding terrain made it an interesting approach!! Fun flying!"
Terry Clark
This comment was written on: 2018-01-11 09:05:42I'm not absolutely positive but I don't think this s the original Tingwall airfield where I landed in a Loganair Islander in 1972. That was a grass/heather airstrip and situated in a narrow valley. I think the original one was in a valley about a mile to the east of the one now in use. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
