LERWICK HELIPADS

Note:  When this listing was first made, it only shows the original helipad.

Location:  Adjacent to and just W of the Leisure Centre.

NOTES: It appears that since 2016 the new helipad has had planning permission to be used by Coastguard and Air Ambulance helicopters. It would appear, reading news reports that the locals are very unhappy about this turn of events, as it seriously disturbs their lives due to the noise. To put this into perspective it is reported that between March 2016 and December 2017, forty emergency landings were made.

The patients still needing to be transported to the Gilbert Bain Hospital some distance away. By comparison it appears sixty emergency landings were made at TINGWALL, and twenty-two at SUMBURGH.

If these reports are correct, clearly Shetlanders, around Lerwick at least, are both ignorant and incredibly selfish. It is well known around the world that after a very serious accident, there is a 'Golden Hour' when patients can very often be saved. Clearly time is of the essence, every minute counts.

For the residents of Lerwick attempting to deny this helipad to very seriously injured people being available, is, surely, utterly despicable behaviour.

A COMPROMISE?

NOTES:  Establishing a new purpose built helipad in recent years, well away from the Leisure Centre, is an obvious improvement from an operational aspect. But, are the locals still complaining about the occassional noise arising from a usually life-saving helicopter arriving?
