A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for both discovering this little known venue, and for providing the following items.
Article One was published in Aeroplane magazine on the 27th November 1913.
The advert was placed in the Sussex Express on the 7th November. As explained, due to inclement weather, the event did not take place until the 19th November.
As we used to say when I was learning to fly in the 1980s - "Time to spare? Go by air."
The two part article was published in the Sussex Express on the 21st November 1913.
The picture of the grandstand etc is from the Lewes Historical Society.
The local area and area views are from my Google Earth © derived database, which does not feature all the flying sites listed in this 'Guide'.
CECIL LAWRENCE PASHLEY, MBE, AFC (14 May 1891 to 10 December 1969)
Affectionately known as 'Pash' in his later years locally, he was also nicknamed 'The Grand Old Man of Aviation', for very good reasons. Devoted to SHOREHAM throughout his long flying career, he and his brother founded the Southern Aero Club in 1911. And many a story has been told about 'Pash'! At least one of which I have related in the SHOREHAM listing.
I can recommend anybody to look up his astonishing flying career. Without any doubt correct, it is claimed that he taught more people to fly than any other pilot in the UK, and logged up some 20,000 hours mostly doing so. When he died in 1969, he was still living near his beloved aerodrome, in Shoreham-by-Sea.
