Lilbourne
LILBOURNE: Military aerodrome (Aka DUNSMORE)
Note: The first picture was kindly provided by Mr Michael T Holder who points out that the aerodrome boundary lines shown are approximate.
The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Location: Straddling the A.5, roughly 1nm SSW of the M1/M6 junction, about 2.5nm NNW of junction 18 on the M1, 3.5nm ENE of Rugby town centre
Period of operation: 1913 to 1919 only?
Runways: All-over grass airfield
NOTES: Originally used it appears by the ‘White forces’ in the 1913 Army exercises.
Mainly used for training by units about to be stationed overseas. In 1916 three Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c aircraft of No.5 Reserve Air Squadron were based here to defend Coventry against Zeppelin raids.
From 1918 to 1919, apparently a base for the Midland Area Instructors School.

For ages I could not determine which County this aerodrome was in. The answer being that it was, straddling the A5 which forms the boundary between Warwickshire and Northamptonshire at this point, in both Counties.
Please see my other entry for LILBOURNE in WARWICKSHIRE which has a lot more information.
