LINCOLN: Temporary aerodrome

NOTES:  The site he landed on was WEST COMMON - see seperate listing

Lincoln was the 16th venue for Sir Alan Cobham's Municipal Aerodrome Campaign Tour in 1929. It started in May and ended on October and was planned to visit one hundred and seven towns and cities, mostly in England but with two venues in Wales and eight in Scotland. In the end, due to a couple of crashes and other set-backs, he managed to visit 97 venues - still a magnificent achievement.

Without any doubt this Tour encouraged the construction of several aerodromes/regional airports. But, perhaps not in or near Lincoln?

And perhaps I should add that in those days nobody could have imagined, even in their wildest dreams, just how a few years later, the area around Lincoln would be surrounded by airfields dedicated in the main to bombers designed to destroy Germany, and of course territory occupied by the Nazi regime.

The aircraft he used for this Tour was mostly the DH61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV, named 'Youth of Britain'. The Tour was without any doubt a most splendid example of sheer stamina and organisation. I can highly recommend reading his memoirs in 'A Time to Fly'.
