Little Stockbeare Farm

LITTLE STOCKBEARE FARM:  Small private airfield     (Aka JACOBSTOWE)

Note:  When defining the very wide variety of private flying sites, I decided to make a distinction. If the site had only one runway it was an airstrip, but if two or more runways existed - it was to be an airfield. This term being borrowed from the Americans of course, but I have failed to find anything else more suitable.

The term aerodrome, (taken from the French), denotes an altogether much larger enterprise, typically with several hangars, fuel and maintenance, etc, etc.

Location:  Just E of the A386, about 1nm SW of Jacobstowe village, and roughly 4nm NNW of Okehampton town centre

Period of operation:  1990s (?) to circa 2018?    (By 2020 there are no traces.)

Runways:  2002:  11/29   220   grass                     06/24   170   grass
Note: As can be seen in the picture there is clearly a short 'cross-bar' defined. Could it be that this was an aiming point if a strong southerly or northerly wind cropped up? Purely a guess of course.

2017:   11/29   210   grass                06/24   205   grass                    09/27   200   grass

NOTES:  What appears very clear is that the person operating this small airfield was being as sensible as possible. Arranging the runways to make operations both easy and safe. Clearly for use by microlight/STOL types, and in itself fairly unusual, given the roughly 5,500 sites already listed.

As always in this 'Guide', if anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
