A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom

Liverpool

Notes: It is just my guess that this was the site used?. It is pretty much that shown on charts of the period, but these were of a scale which didn't show any detail.

LIVERPOOL: Seaplane Alighting Area

Location: On the west coast of the Mersey estuary roughly halfway between Birkenhead and Bebbington

NOTES: Today certainly it does seem strange that a base on the Wirral, in CHESHIRE, should be named LIVERPOOL (in LANCASHIRE of course) but a 1930 Ordnance Survey Aviation Map clearly shows the location and name. A 1934 edition of Air Pilot states that Customs were on site but it doesn’t appear to have been licensed.

So it appears that seaplane and/or flying boat services operated from here, presumably to Ireland. Why else would Customs facilities be required?

If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
