Liverpool flying sites

Note: This map only shows the position of Liverpool city within the UK.

LIVERPOOL see also AINTREE

LIVERPOOL see also LIVERPOOL POLO GROUND

LIVERPOOL: Balloon ascent site

Operated by: Vincenzo Lunardi

Location: ?

Period of operation: 20th July and 9th August 1785

NOTES: His July flight landed at Simon’s Wood near Aintree. His second flight descended near Taporley initially but was dragged for some distance by the wind, ending up near Beeston Castle.

LIVERPOOL: Flying ground or airfield, perhaps even a aerodrome

Period of operation: 1912 certainly

NOTES: On 15/10/12 two pilots were awarded their Pilots Certificates, Edward Birch (No.322) and W L Hardman (No.323) flying a Blériot Monoplane from LIVERPOOL. But for me of course the big question is where the devil was this allusive location? Could it have been what was later called SPEKE or AINTREE perhaps?

LIVERPOOL: Seaplane alighting area, see BIRKENHEAD CHESHIRE

LIVERPOOL: Civil aerodrome (Was this SPEKE?)

Pleasure flights: Avro Transport Co

Location: ?

Period of operation: 1919 to 1920 only?

NOTES: In researching this book I soon learnt not to jump to conclusions. For nearly all my life flying activity associated with LIVERPOOL has always been from either SPEKE or later the nearby LIVERPOOL AIRPORT. However, this activity was taking place well before SPEKE opened and indeed, a beach or harbour site cannot be ruled out as many of the Avro pleasure flight operations were undertaken by aircraft fitted with floats.

LIVERPOOL: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: So very typically vague, the venue for Sir Alan Cobham’s 1934 Tour on the 21st July is given simply as “LIVERPOOL”. Possibly SPEKE of course but does anybody know better?
