Llanelli
LLANELLI: Military airfield (aka PEMBRY)
NOTES: The information regarding the existence of this airfield comes from the most excellent autobiography of Brian Kingcome ‘A Willingness To Die’ when his squadron, No 92 flying Spitfires, were posted here from BIGGIN HILL in 1940/41. It is of course interesting to learn that, as Mr Kingcome has been so specific regarding his postings that this seems rather unlikely he would refer to it by an incorrect name.
One aspect of my research, which can of course be very frustrating, is that even in WW2 many airfields were known by the pilots, aircrews and others, by different names - often not by the official name.
One detail I liked was when he describes borrowing a Miles Magister from the ‘Comms Flight’ to fly across to Devon to land nearby and inspect the wreckage of a Junkers Ju.88 he played a part in shooting down, and being offered trophies and ‘spoils’ such as a Zeiss camera.
