Llanishen
LLANISHEN: Military airfield
Military users: ATC gliders, later U.S. Army units
We have Mr Martin Chamberlain to thank for pointing out this location, which is roughly within the oval area I have marked. The aerial view is from Google Earth © and the local area view is taken from my Google Earth © derived database.
Location: Now a suburb of Cardiff, about 3nm N of the city centre
Period of operation: WW2 or thereabouts only?
NOTES: It appears that soon after the RAF Regiment established a base here in 1941, gliding activities took place. The U.S. Army arrived in 1943 and it is reported that flight instruction took place in "Tiger Cubs", an aircraft type unknown of course, but local historians are not usually au fait with aviation matters. Without any doubt these aircraft were Piper Cubs (Grasshoppers) and probably 65hp L-4s.
I have flown a 65hp Piper J3C Cub (N6685H) out of Locarno in Switzerland, in November 2006, and reckoned that determining the rate of climb would be best served by using a calender.
