Lopcombe Corner


Note: This map only shows the location of Lopcombe Corner within the UK. If anybody could kindly provide a more precise position for the airfield, this advice will be most welcome. 


LOPCOMBE CORNER: Military aerodrome

Military users: RFC [Royal Flying Corps] & RAF [Royal Air Force] Training Depot Station

52 Sqdn   (RE.8s)

74 & 85 Sqdns   (SE5a’s) 

91 Sqdn (Sopwith Dolphins)
 

Location: In near Lopcombe Corner where the A343 joins the A30, about 7.5nm ENE to NE of Salisbury centre
 

Period of operation: 1917 to 1918 (Some say 1919)
 

Site area: 228 acres    1143 x 777

 

NOTES: It seems that during the run-up to D-Day in 1944 this, or at least another nearby location, was used by US Army L-4 aircraft.
