Lords Cricket Ground

LORD’S CRICKET GROUND: Balloon ascent

NOTES: It appears that on the 5th July 1802, the French aeronaut Andre-Jacques Garnerin made a balloon ascent here, landing near Chingford in ESSEX. Which now of course is part of Greater London.

The problem here is that the ascent did not take place from the site we now know, but somewhere nearby. Thomas Lord established three cricket grounds in this area between 1787 and 1814, the last being the famous cricket ground we now know.

AN INTERESTING ESCAPADE
Please see my listing for MARYLEBONE CRICKET GROUND, which I now realise was actually the LORD'S CRICKET GROUND, but not described as such in the account I came across.

A CONSTANT PROBLEM
I am not complaining, far from it, by in trying to produce a 'Guide' for British flying sites, it is often the case that a single site is known by two or more names. I have tried, when I realse that this is the case, to cross reference all these examples, but will admit to probably missing out quite a few. If you have spotted any errors in this regard, please e-mail me or leave a comment in the listing.

I have only just discovered this very useful site. A letter to Brian Hope, editor of the LAA Light Aviation magazine, would no doubt increase site visits. Duds

Reply from Dick Flute:
Hi Dudley, Brian Hope who I know quite well, is already well aware of this site. It has been mentioned in Light Aviation magazine, and I will hope for another mention one day. Regards, Dick
