Lossiemouth civil

Note: This map only shows my estimate for this location. If anybody can kindly confirm this is correct, or provide a more exact position, this advice will be most welcome.

LOSSIEMOUTH see also SHEMPSTONE FARM

LOSSIEMOUTH: Civil Landing Ground

Operated by: Mr William Mustard, Muirton, Lossiemouth

Location: “1.5m S of town, imm SW B9153, S of Kinneddar”

Period of operation: 1930s only?

Runway(s): Max landing run: 549 grass (Another report claims: 457 grass)

NOTES: Listed in the ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’ in the 1930s and indeed an AA (Automobile Association) approved Landing Ground. One of seventy four AA approved LGs in the 1930s on mainland Britain.

Fuel was available from the Lossie Filling Station and transport (typically a taxi service) from J McLoed at 32 James Street, Lossiemouth. In 1933 it appears that two hotels were available nearby, (presumably both in Lossiemouth?), the Stotfield Hotel and Marine Hotel.

However, the nearest telephone was at Muirton Farm, “500 yards SE of LG”. All of this goes to show that in the 1930s, far from being in the “back of beyond” this area of Scotland was highly developed.

FLYING CIRCUS VENUES?
Was this perhaps the venue used by Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour on the 18th July 1933 and also the venue on the 18th May for Cobham’s 1934 Tour?
