Ludford House Meadow

Note: This map shows only my guess as to where this site may have been, but, if incorrect it would not be any distance away. Can anybody kindly offer advice on this?

LUDFORD HOUSE MEADOW: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: Berkshire Aviation Co

Location: Near Ludlow

Period of operation: At some time between February and May 1922. Probably April?

NOTES:

Some time ago I made this comment. "Perhaps the same venue site for Alan Cobham’s 1929 Municipal Aerodrome Campaign?" We now know he landed in a field on FELTON FARM, near and just east of the racecourse, about 1.5nm NW of Ludlow town centre. See seperate listing.

LUDLOW was the 77th venue for this Tour. Starting in May and ending in October one hundred and seven venues were visited. Mostly in England, two were in Wales and eight in Scotland. One thing seems fairly certain, regarding the nature of the geography around Ludlow, the open spaces around the town appear fairly limited.

The aircraft Cobham used for this Tour was the DH.61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV named 'Youth of Britain'. Operating here on the 11th September. The punishing schedule he set himself seems astonishing today. Highly recommended is reading his memoirs in 'A Time To Fly".

Without any doubt this Tour did result in many aerodromes/regional airports being commissioned - but not in Ludlow.

LUDFORD is a village just S of the River Teme, situated by the Ludford Bridge and just south of Ludlow which is on the north and east side of the river.
