Lydd flying sites

Note: This map is only my estimation of where the WW2 ALG (Advanced Landing Ground) might have been situated. If anybody could be kind enough to either confirm this, or provide a more accurate location, this will be most welcome.

LYDD CAMP: Military Balloon Station and later but briefly RFC aerodrome

Military users: Royal Engineers No.2 Balloon School Testing and artillery observation

Note: It appears the RFC used LYDD CAMP for aeroplane detachments in 1914

Location: Adjacent to and S/SW of Lydd on the B2075, roughly 15nm SW of Folkestone

Period of operation: 1886 to 1914 (some say 1916)

LYDD see also DERING FARM

LYDD: Military Kite Balloon School

Military user: RFC/RAF

Location: Adjacent to and NW of Lydd

Period of operation: 1916 to 1918

NOTES: It appears this was an entirely separate site although obviously situated pretty close to LYDD CAMP listed above

LYDD: Military airfield -  Advanced Landing Ground

Military users: RAF Fighter Command          11 Group

Location: SW of Wheelsgate village, 5nm NW of Dungeness

Period of operation: 1943 to 1945

Runways: Steel matting      SE/NW   1463x46   grass           SW/NE   1280x46   grass

NOTES: At first glance when starting out on the project I immediately assumed this was the origins for LYDD airport but soon realised the site was roughly 2nm NW of the present airport which places the site very close to, if not on (?) the WW1 DERING

FARM location.
