LYNMOOR: Temporary aerodrome  (Aka LYN DOWN and LYNTON)
 

Operated by: Sir Alan Cobham’s 1934 Tour and his 1935 No.1 Tour  (Also an air taxi flight in June 1935) 
 

Location: S of the A39, about 1.25nm SSE of Lynton town centre

Period of operation: 31st July 1934, 24th June - air taxi, and 27th August 1935

Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', has very kindly investigated this location and we need to thank him for both identifying the location and providing the maps, newspaper articles etc.

We do not know exactly which field was used, but the 500 acre field seems most likely? The advert was placed in the North Devon Journal on the 26th July 1934.

I cannot be entirely certain, but I do think that Article Four gives the only account, in this 'Guide', of an air taxi service being conducted in England from a little used venue such as this, well away from any major town or city?





 

NOTES:  It is not widely appreciated today that these 'Flying Circus' venues of the 1930s were officially licensed 'aerodromes' even if used for just one day. Hardly surprising I suppose given the amount of aerial activity taking place and the huge crowds that gathered.

Indeed, in the early days a couple of men from the Ministry would arrive to survey the site in advance, and usually impose some restrictions. Later, the more responsible operators, (at least?), were allowed to be self-regulating. But I think they still had to provide the Ministry with various details.
