Maiden Newton

Note: This map only shows the postion of Maiden Newton village within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer advice regarding the location of the gliding site, this will be much appreciated.

MAIDEN NEWTON: Gliding site

Operated by: Dorset Gliding Club

Location: In/near Maiden Newton on the A356 about 6 nm NW of Dorchester

Period of operation: 1929 initially. Then later according to some sources from 1937 to 1938

NOTES: According to the Dorset Gliding Club website the first Club was formed here in 1929 after a demonstration of ridge soaring by a group of German pilots “who toured the country”, (was this just in England or the UK?), “doing demonstration flights.”

It appears that after the Aeronca C-2 G-ABHE was converted to being a glider having suffered terminal engine failure, and after having been demonstrated to be a perfectly acceptable glider at BORDON in HAMPSHIRE, the aircraft was “given” to the Dorset Gliding Club, created for the purpose of flying it. It seems that a gale in November 1938 destroyed the hangar and the “unique” (?) Aeronca C-2 glider. So called ‘Mother’ nature really can so often be a real bitch….can’t she?
