Manton Park
MANTON PARK: Company helicopter Landing Area
Note: The first two pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Martyn Meade Racing (Horse racing)
Location: Roughly 1nm NW of Marlborough town centre
Period of operation: Probably from around 2021(?) to -
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location.
When starting out on this project over twenty years ago, I had no idea just how significant the contribution of horse racing activities would be. Indeed, even before WW1 major horse racing venues were seen as being ideal locations for 'exhibitions of flying'. And of course, since WW2 they feature largely in having aerodrome facilities, for fixed wing operations, and now, to a large extent, replaced by having helipads.
In more recent decades, most major training facilities have a designated helicopter landing area, and a few have airstrips.
I expect there is no way of finding out, but I do sometimes wonder how much capital investment is involved in every kind of sporting activity revolving around horses in the UK? Mostly centred in England of course. From local riding schools to the major events such as The Derby and The Grand National etc. And how this compares with, say, car manufacturing? Most of which today is owned by foreign investors - who of course also have huge stakes in our horse racing.
