MAPPERTON FARM: Private airstrip?

NOTES: According to the DORSET AIRFIELDS web site it seems it is only rumoured that an airstrip existed or exists on MAPPERTON FARM in/near the village of Almer on the A31 about 7.5nm NW of Poole town centre. Can anybody kindly confirm this?

It has of course been known for an airstrip to be 'laid out', (mowed usually), on a suitable field and only used for a year or two. Even then infrequently. And indeed, just a suitable field is often used, sometimes for many years. Indeed I was once given permission to land on a field next to customers premises, with a landing run of around 350 metres. In a Cessna 172 on my own with half tanks, quite easily achievable. But with no windsock, and marginal length, I then asked myself if what I was really trying to achieve was my first serious accident.

It wouldn't be the first time I have taken off in light wind conditions, only to find a howling wind blowing an hour or so later. No doubt our customer and their employees would have been interested if not delighted if I had landed next door. But trying to please people has resulted in no end of accidents over the years. It is a hard temptation to resist.
