Marcross

MARCROSS: 'Q' site later USAAF use

Military users: RAF LLANDOW, later USAAF

Location: 6nm S to SSE of Bridgend

Period of operation: WW2 only?

NOTES: Here once again, the history varies considerably. I have found accounts saying that MARCROSS was a dispersal airfield for RAF LLANDOW. Further research seems to show that it was originally a 'Q' site, a decoy airfield manned by personnel from 53 OTU (Operational Training Unit) based at LLANDOW. Probably used from 1940, perhaps 1941, until December 1941 or July 1942.

However, it does appear reasonably certain that MARCROSS was used by Piper L-4s in association with the U.S. Army camp at St Donats Castle from around 1943. Until 1944 or longer?
