Marsh Gibbon

Note: This map only gives the position of Marsh Gibbon village within the UK.

MARSH GIBBON: Private airstrip

Operated by: Mr F R H Parker?

Location: In/near Marsh Gibbon about 5nm E of Bicester town centre

Period of operation: 1970s only?

NOTES: During the mid 1970s it appears the only aircraft based here was Cessna 150D G-ASST - a registration more suitable for Concorde I’d say!

In an article featuring Don Lord in the March 2018 edition of Light Aviation magazine another most intriguing aspect comes to light. Having become interested in painting in oils Don had become a member of the Guild of Aviation Artists and has this story to tell: "A number of members, (My note - PFA members), once flew into Marsh Gibbon, where friends from the Guild were having a fly-in/paint-in-day."

"They positioned your aircraft, where it had to stay for three hours, while it was painted by an artist. The pilots with two-seat aircraft then gave flights to the artists - most of them had never flown - and my logbook says I did two hours thirty in twelve flights." This must have involved a very quick turn-around indeed. But, in those days, did anybody care about a full pre-flight briefing? I very much doubt it.

I am also now wondering if this site is the same for my listing of PEAR TREE FARM? Many years ago I would have assumed it must be - but experience has taught me to be very wary of quickly jumping to conclusions. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.

I discovered this strip back in the '90s whilst microlighting out of Halton. It's actually visible on GE just west of the village off the Bicester Road just NW of 'K W Goss Car Sales' so it probably is a duplication of 'Pear Tree Farm'.

Used to live in Marsh Gibbon 1970-82, can confirm that the airstrip was on the left as you leave Marsh Gibbon on the road to Stratton Audley. I don't remember a "Pear Tree Farm"though. It got a mention in the village pantomime one year - in a song set to "an English Country Garden" was the line "We even have a man with his own aeroplane....."
