Meriden

MERIDEN: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

38 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c, later F.E.2b)

Location: Meriden is just S of the A45, on the B4104, about 6nm WNW of Coventry city centre

Period of operation: 1916 to 1918

NOTES: Used as a Day & Night Landing Ground by 38 Sqdn, the significance of this location appears to be largely ignored today as indeed has the existence of the WW1 Landing Ground.

Meridan is historically reckoned to be the exact centre of England, and a small monument is placed on the village green to mark the spot. Much larger though is a nearby monument to commemorate the cyclists who died in WW1! And quite rightly too.
