Methil flying sites
Note: This map only shows a rough position within the UK. If somebody does know the exact location(s) used, this advice will be most welcome.
METHIL: Balloon Station
Military user: RNAS Kite balloon station
Location: Presumably near or the same as the site listed below?
Period of operation: 1917 to 1918
METHIL: Temporary aerodrome
Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1932 National Aviation Day UK Display Tour
Location: Kirkcaldy-Leven Road, 1nm NE of Buckhaven
Period of operation: 30th September 1932
NOTES: In 1932 this venue was listed as Buckhaven but on maps today Methil warrants equal status with Buckhaven, a clear sign of how things change over several decades.
There is also a question about the site used on the 14th September 1932 which could have been another site, listed as: Buckhaven, Banbeath, Windygates – Leven Road.
If anybody can now clear this up, it will be very much welcomed. It has to be remembered that in those days only a suitable field was required and quite often plans were changed at short notice if another farmer offered a better deal. On the other hand, it was not unknown for a farmer, despite having entered a contract weeks or even months before to host the event, suddenly decided considering the recent weather etc, that the field was now more suitable for crops - and ploughed it up.
