Milne Park

Note: This map only shows the position of Milne Park today (2016). Presumably when operational few if any of the surrounding housing estates existed? If anybody can kindly confirm this location,or indeed provide a more exact location, this advice will be much appreciated.

MILNE PARK: Civil aerodrome    (Aka ADDINGTON)
Note: See the seperate listing for ADDINGTON regarding a notable forced landing prior to WW1.

Forced Landing Ground for CROYDON airport in the 1930s? Emergency Landing Ground for BIGGIN HILL in WW2

Location: In/near Addington, (possibly on the Addington Golf Course today?), but apparently on the parkland still known as Milne Park. 3nm E to ESE of Croydon

Period of operation: 1930s to WW2 only?

NOTES: It appears that after the British Air Transport Company took over the Henderson School of FIying based at CROYDON and BROOKLANDS they moved the school to ADDINGTON which I assume was MILNE PARK? They then moved in 1933 to GATWICK and then to REDHILL in late 1934.

Another listing I came across states that the airfield was founded by Henly's for flying training and aircraft maintenance. Was this the company that was also a well known car dealership?

Milne Park is the only open space remaining of the Addington airfield, which was largely built-over by the New Addington housing estate immediately pre and post war. I lived in New Addington and I recall one of my teachers ( who was ex RAF ) saying it wasn't used during the war because of the proximity of housing - there were two nearby decoy sites at Hutchinson Bank overlooking Featherbed Lane, and Woldingham.

Britain from Above has a 1933 photo EPW041031 of G-ABYX - Clive the Youth of Australia - flying near Addington over Birch Wood; and a photo EPW003360 of New Addington in 1946 - there is no sign of the A/F that I could see.

Milne park was used during the war (as told by my grandfather) as a pilot training runway. The old runway still exists underneath.
