Minchinhampton

MINCHINHAMPTON: Military aerodrome      (Soon renamed ASTON DOWN)

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

No. 5 Training Squadron Station

6 Training Squadron

Location: Roughly 2.5nm SE of Stroud

Period of operation: 1918 to 1919          (see ASTON DOWN for later details)

Site area: WW1: 170 acres      869 x 731

NOTES: It appears that the residents of Minchinhampton were so worried that having the airfield named after their village could attract enemy bombers - and this was the reason the airfield was then renamed ASTON DOWN. This appears to be unique in British aviation history in WW1 at least?
