Minques

MINQUES: Military later private helipad

Location: A large reef of rocks, S of Jersey with some permanent buildings

Landing area: Concrete oblong helipad

NOTES: It would appear that this helipad was constructed by the military, possibly in the late 1960s? But for what purpose?

Despite quite a bit of research I cannot find an exact location. Indeed, it is pretty difficult to pin down, for this 'Guide' an example of the inhabited parts of the Minques. They appear to be on the east side.

A PERSONAL MEMORY
In April 1999, when sitting around in Dinard, a favourite place to visit for a few days, I had the bright idea of flying across to Jersey. On the face of it, looking at our Pooley's Flight Guide, it seemed a most daunting prospect, but by then I had enough experience to 'cut most of the corners'.

I rang the tower at Jersey airport. Basically the response was, "Not a problem, call overhead the Minques." There then followed a few moments of silence from me, and I suspect they were having a good laugh at my expense - and why not? I replied, "I'm sorry sir, I cannot find the Minques on my chart."

They told me, "Don't worry, you'll soon see them." And indeed we did, a very substanstial area of reefs roughly twenty miles south of Jersey. This said, I think we hadn't spotted that a few were inhabited.
