Montford Bridge

MONTFORD BRIDGE: Military aerodrome later private airfield

Military users: RAF Fighter Command            12 Group

61 OTU [Operational Training Unit]    (Vickers-Supermarine Spitfires & North American P-51 Mustangs)

US Army Air Force liaison    (Or so it appears - is anything known?)

34 MU  [Maintenance Unit)
Note: It appears that from June to December 1945, 34 MU were engaged in scrapping Hotspur gliders and Miles Masters delivered in from SHOBDON

Location: At Forton Heath, N of Montford Bridge, N of the A5, 4nm NW of Shrewsbury

Period of operation: Military: 1942 to 1945            Civil: 1980s only?

Runways: 07/25   1344x46   hard           02/20   1189x46   hard
                15/33   914x46   hard

NOTES: In WW2 the runway surface was listed as being tarmac with rubber chippings and in late 1944 700 RAF plus 63 WAAFs were based here.

In 1985 listed as being used for private flying but for how long did this take place? Perhaps it still does of course; just because a airfield is shown as disused on modern charts doesn’t actually prove that somebody isn’t using it, especially with a microlight.
