MORE RIVER CLYDE FLYING SITES

NOTES:  When based in Scotland, my very good friend James Roland, then a Senior Captain with British Airways, had a share in the Reims Cessna FR172F Reims Rocket, G-DRAM, (ex OH-CNS), based as a floatplane at LOCH EARN. It was later converted to become an amphibian, based at PRESTWICK.

For many years, since the 1970s, floatplane flying in England had pretty much ceased. But in Scotland it has thrived, to some extent at least, both privately and commercially.

James loved flying in Scotland in this floatplane and regularly explored the region landing on as many Lochs as possible, but also from time to time on the River Clyde in Glasgow. Here are a few pictures he has sent for us to appreciate.

Notes:  The picture at Braehead was taken when G-DRAM was still a floatplane. The following three pictures are when G-DRAM had been converted to become an amphibian.

NOTES:  It is odd how life works out. Back in December 2093, when on a holiday in Florida, when my wife and daughter went shopping, I elected to undergo all the practical exercises to get a floatplane rating at Winterhaven. Loved it, flying a Piper J.3S Cub and Cessna C.172S. My instructor asked me, as I was doing so well, why I didn't want to get the full rating. Living in London I told him it was pointless, there was no chance I would ever get a chance to fly floatplanes.

Little did I know then that ten years later, I would indeed get the chance to fly floatplanes - in Scotland. All by becoming befriended by James when I was working on an entirely different project.
