NAILSWORTH: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: On the 7th September 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.1 Tour displayed here. Nailsworth is about 4nm S of Stroud. It seems incredible today but this organisation really did believe in trying to bring aviation to the general public by displaying “on their doorstep”.
I have been asked why this 'Guide' features so many sites used by the 'Flying Ciircus' operators - even when only used for one or two days. The answer is two-fold; firstly, by the late 1920s, they were officially licensed aerodromes. Indeed, in the early days the sites were inspected by officials, (usually two), to determine their fitness for purpose. Quite often restrictions were imposed.
Secondly, these visits are a very important part of British aviation heritage. For a great many people it was their first opportunity to get close to aircraft, and especially, a first opportunity to have a flight. It was noted when the RAF started recruiting in earnest leading up to WW2 that so many cited their interest in aviation starting after such visits.
