New Brighton

NEW BRIGHTON see also RED NOSES

NEW BRIGHTON: Temporary seaplane alighting area

Operated by: Mr Frank Hucks

Location: In the River Mersey close to the New Brighton landing stage

Period of operation: Summer of 1914

NOTES: The main reason for including this venue, probably being just a one-off visit (?), is due to my seeing a photograph of Frank Hucks standing up in the cockpit of his Maurice Farman ‘pusher’ seaplane. Behind on the landing stage a huge crowd had gathered to witness his arrival. It seems difficult today to comprehend just how fantastic the arrival of one aeroplane could appear to the local population.

I assume of course that this event took place before the UK became involved in WW1 in August 1914. And, to wonder how many men in that crowd were soon to perish in Flanders and beyond.
