Newton Farm

NEWTON FARM: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: The Scottish Aerial Touring and Transportation Co

Location: 1nm N of Hawick

Period of operation: Roughly two weeks in June 1920

NOTES: The early WW1 Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c G-EARW was used, principally for aerial photography of the Hawick Common Riding annual event, but also for joy-riding. Or so some claim. I’d reckon the revenue from giving joy rides was by far the main purpose? On the other hand I do believe this is the first example I have discovered of a B.E.2c being used in a civilian guise for commercial gain?
