Newton-on-Rawcliffe

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE:  Private airstrip/airfield    (Aka NEWTON-upon-RAWCLIFFE and LYDDS HOUSE)

(Note: It is just one of my foibles, but, for me an airstrip is just that - an airstrip singular. Therefore, if a site has two or more runways, I define it as an airfield.)

Note:   All eight of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©

Location:  Just SSE of Newton-on-Rawcliffe village, about 3nm NNE of Pickering town centre and 13.5nm W of Scarborough town centre

Period of operation:  Unknown ? Possibly 1990s (?) to -

Runway(s):  Main runway =   17/35   670   grass

Second runway (not always in use) =   14/32   280   grass

NOTES:  A most unusual if not unique feature of this location is the 'peek-a-boo', (now you see me, now you don't), 14/32 runway. See the pictures above. Presumably intended for use by microlights? This said, in the earlier pictures, it looks as if it could perhaps only be used as a taxiway? However, the 2018 picture clearly shows it being seperate with a turning circle at its NW end.

All a bit anoraky of course, but how do you avoid being a bit of an 'anorak' if compiling a 'Guide' such as this? Needless to say, the long lists often included in some listings are most certainly intended for the hard bitten enthusiast.

A BIT OF INTEREST
In 2022 our good friend of this 'Guide' Mr Graham Frost, told me that the Mooney M20A, G-ARWY, was based here in the early 1970s. And indeed, checking with 'G-INFO', it was based here, or at least regisitered with one part-owner with this address, from 07.10.71 to 23.03.73. But of course, given the considerable time gap, was it in fact, based exactly here?

As always in this 'Guide' if anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome. As are pictures.
