North Stoke

NORTH STOKE: Military RLG   (Relief Landing Ground)

Military user:  RAF  (Royal Air Force)

No 3 FIS (Advanced)

Location:: On Lansdown racecourse. About 3.5nm NW of Bath

Period of operation:  1943 to 1945

NOTES:  I had made this note: "To date I have found no other details, can anybody help? If so, such advice will be most welcome." I had thought it might be a private airstrip, and in some ways it appears I was correct, in as much as it seems Lansdown, (Bath), racecourse did have an airstrip after WW2. Presumably using the WW2 runway? And existing it seems until 1980 or thereabouts.

In May 2019 Tim Hill came to my rescue.

No.3 FIS (Flight Instructors School) was based at HULLAVINGTON. They operated Airspeed Oxfords for twin-engine operations, and North American T.6 Harvards, Miles Magisters and Masters for single-engine instruction.
