I have to thank, as so often, the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust for identifying the exact site.




 

NOTES: It seems that Korvetenkäpitan Otto Hersing, commanding U-boat U-21 in January 1915, had orders to fire on and destroy the German designed airship shed on NORTH WALNEY. It appears the attack failed after shore batteries opened up.

This kind of history is nothing if not fascinating….for example please try to find and read: ‘An Aeronautical History of the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway Region’ by Peter Connon. I owe, initially, his Part Two, (1915 to 1930), for this info.
