NORTHENHAY: Balloon ascent site

NOTES: It does seem that Captain Dale flew a balloon named ‘Victoria’ on the 27th August 1887, in aid of the “Hospital Saturday Fund”, reaching 5,500ft and landing safely near Tiverton.

This balloon was ‘powered’ by coal gas as were nearly if not all balloons in the Victorian era, a period that saw unprecedented amounts of balloon ascents throughout the UK which drew huge numbers of spectators. An era of flight, unique to the UK, which appears to have almost been forgotten.
