Norwich flying sites

Note: This map only shows the position of Norwich city within the UK.

NORWICH see also MOUSEHOLD HEATH

NORWICH see also RANELAGH GARDENS

NORWICH: Balloon ascent

Balloon ascent in June 1897
Balloon ascent in June 1897

Location: Norwich Market Place

NOTES: In his book Flying and Ballooning John Fabb includes a photograph captioned, “A balloon ascent from Norwich Market Place, 22 June 1897, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee.”

NORWICH: Civil aerodrome (also known as AYLSHAM ROAD)

Operated by: Mann Egerton & Co

Manufacturing: Mann Egerton & Co

Location: Just N of the A1042 Norwich Ring Road, E of the A140, about 1nm S of the HORSHAM St FAITH / NORWICH AIRPORT site

Period of operation: 1915 to 1919

Site area: 60 acres

NOTES: An advert in Jane’s world aircraft directory of 1917 for the Mann Egerton company refers to their ‘Norwich Aircraft Works’ and a drawing depicts a hangar and busy aerodrome scene.

On 01/09/15 Lieut. Denis Beauchamp Taylor was awarded his Pilot Certificate No.1683 flying a Maurice Farman biplane and the record states very clearly the location was NORWICH. I now feel pretty confident about thinking he was flying from this site?

NORWICH: Temporary aerodrome perhaps?

NOTES: Norwich was the venue on the 19th August 1933 for Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour. Does anybody now know the exact location used for this display? Regional airports and other recognised Landing Grounds were often avoided due to the often intensive nature of their operations - and the cost. The same question applies when, on the 13th July 1935 Cobham’s No.1 Tour visited Norwich.

NORWICH: Private airstrip

Operated by: Mr R J Alston

Location: ?

Period of operation: ?

Runway: 18/36   350x12   grass

NOTES: Can anybody add more information regarding this location?

NORWICH: Temporary heliport

Operated by: BEA

Location: MOUSEHOLD HEATH (See also Notes for MOUSEHOLD HEATH aerodrome)

Period of operation: June to September 1948, February to March 1949 and October 1949 to April 1950

NOTES: I have made this as a seperate listing from MOUSEHOLD HEATH simply because, in other parts of the country, BEA decided to construct an independent heliport rather than use an existing aerodrome, even when one existed nearby. However, did this 'rule' apply in this case?

NORWICH was listed as being a refuelling station for the helicopter operations from PETERBOROUGH. Some services returned to PETERBOROUGH via EAST DEREHAM whereas an experimental night service routed via DOWNHAM MARKET it seems.
