Nottingham Heliport

Note: This map shows only my estimation of where the heliport was situated, and I have no confidence in the accuracy. If anybody can be kind enough to either confirm or provide a more exact location, this will be most welcome.

Operated by:   British European Airways

Note: The copyright for both these pictures, from the John Stroud Collection, appears to be:  British European Airways. Now British Airways.

Location: It appears this heliport was on the present day Dunkirk Industrial Estate in Lenton which is just SW of the city centre

NOTES: In 1956 BEA inaugurated a thrice daily, (later twice daily), Birmingham - Leicester- Nottingham helicopter service using Westland-Sikorsky S.55s. In Leicester they built a city centre heliport but the site in Nottingham, as can be seen, was a rather more modest affair. Even so, it compared rather favourably with the HAYMILLS facility provided in Birmingham.

Some experts claim that this heliport only operated from the 2nd July to the 12th November 1956.

I travelled on this on 1956 July 21, one-way from Nottingham to Leicester, at the tender age of 7, with my father. Must have been a last-minute offer - the ticket (I've still got the counterfoil) was sold on July 19. Fare 16/6 - 83p in new money. And somewhere I have a photo of me standing in front of the helicopter.

Hi Iain, Any chance of getting scans of that ticket and picture? Preferably as a jpeg and not more than 500KB. But any other means will be gladly accepted. Best regards, Dick
