NUNEATON: Balloon ascent
Location: ? (Within the town it seems)
Period of operation: Mid to late 1890s?
NOTES: In his memoirs Geoffrey de Havilland states, “Suddenly a great balloon rose from the town, climbing steadily and fast and high into the sky.” He claims that seeing the balloon ascend led to him and his brother Ivon deciding to design and build a flying machine. They were in their early teens at the time? In 1905 Ivon died and it would seem that it was probably during this grieving period that de Havilland resolved to design, build and fly an aeroplane.
However, it wasn’t until 1907 that, as a draughtsman working for the Motor Omnibus Construction Company of Walthamstow and driven half mad by the tedium, he decided, “I was prepared to give my life to aviation.” Also, see FULHAM, LONDON
