Orton

Note: This map only shows a rough position within the UK.

ORTON: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RFC/RAF   (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

75 [Home Defence] Sqdn    (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c, B.E.2e & F.E.2b types)

90 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Avro 504K)

Location: Just E of the A1139, about 1nm NE of junction 17 on the A1(M), 2.5nm SW of Peterborough city centre

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 40 acres     411 x 384

NOTES: Apparently used as a Night Landing Ground only? The description of the location appears to show the airfield being situated near Orton Waterville but I cannot find any secondary proof to confirm this. Indeed, a search on Google for example provides no information at all - all references being directed to GREAT ORTON in CUMBERLAND / CUMBRIA

Possibly the airfield was also known by another name? If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
