Outmarsh Farm
OUTMARSH FARM: Civil Landing Ground
Note: Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Operated by: Mr W H Hunt, Outmarsh Farm, Semington Road, Melksham
Location: “1.5m S of town, E of A350 between canal and disused railway”
Period of operation: 1930s only?
Runway(s): Max. landing run: 741 grass (?)
(Another source states the max. landing run available in 1933 was just: 283 [310 yards] grass)
NOTES: Listed in the 1930s ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’ and one of seventy-four A.A. (Automobile Association) approved Landing Grounds in the 1930s. Fuel and transport (typically a taxi service) was available from Stringer’s Garage, Market Place, Melksham.
The hotel listed in 1933, the King’s Arms, Market Place, Melksham is still in business today. A telephone was available at Outmarsh Farm 150 yards from the Landing Ground. In 1933 at least it seems the LG did not have a hangar on site.
On the 22nd May 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day No.2 Tour displayed in/near Melksham and ‘possibly’ with a landing area of 741 metres.
In May 2020 Mr Michael T Holder kindly contacted me with a pinpoint location.
