Overton Heath
OVERTON HEATH: Military airfield
Note: This picture (2009) was obtained from Google Earth ©
Note: Without much if any doubt the much later and well known micro-light airfield is positioned on part of this WW2 airfield. See seperate entry - CLENCH COMMON
Military user: RAF Flying Training Command 23 Group
RLG (Relief Landing Ground) for RAF UPAVON
7 FIS (Flight Instructors School)
Note: It is said that 1537 Beam Approach Training Flight also used this airfield. I find this questionable - because it seems rather doubtful that these landing aids would have been installed here, at such a relatively small establishment. But I would be very happy to be proved wrong.
Location: E of A435, E & SE of Clench Common village, 1nm S of Marlborough
Period of operation: 1941 to 1945
Runways: Steel matting 11/29 1600 grass 06/24 1372 grass
NOTES:
It appears that due to poor drainage, this airfield only became properly operational in 1942, after the Sommerfield track had been installed.
As I suppose befits it’s purpose as a Relief Landing Ground, only 85 RAF personnel were on station at the end of 1944.
