A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for researching the history of this Air Race, and providing maps of the Control Points, plus pictures and other information.
The route diagram was obtained from The Aviation Historian.
Article One was published in the Yorkshire Evening Post. This race, nicknamed the "War of the Roses", due to the Blackburn being built in Yorkshire and the Avro from Lancashire, was basically a race between a monoplane and a biplane. As can be seen, the results were hardly conclusive at that time.
The local area view and the area view are both from my Google Earth © derived database.
NOTES: On embarking on this project now over twenty five years ago, (from 2024), I have found it very interesting to discover the history of the monoplane versus the bi-plane. (Let alone the tri-plane). It seems that from the earliest days, in France at least, both concepts were adopted without either one having a major advantage over the other. And, indeed, it wasn't until the 1930s, for fighter aircraft designs especially, and much advanced scientific work of course, that the monoplane concept took over.
We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
