RACECOURSE FARM: Temporary aerodrome
Operated by: Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour
Location: Llanfoist 1nm SW of Abergavenny town centre
Period of operation: 27th August 1932
NOTES: On the 10th September 1933 Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Abergavenny. But did they use the same site?
Note: These two pictures, (c/o H. Wilson), were scanned from the execellent book Cornwall Aviation Company by Ted Chapman, published in 1979.
The caption for the first picture is: "Lofty Wilson, left, and Cyril Poole working on G-AAAF near Abergavenny in 1932, after a heavy landing with Cobham's Circus."
The caption for the second picture is: "Another view of the above. The aeroplane was dismantled and sent back to St. Austell on the Great Western Railway."
Looking at these two pictures I am not at all convinced that they were the result of a heavy landing as such. In those days the 'Flying Circus' operators often used just fields which seemed suitable by arrangement with the farmer. It could well be that the hapless pilot on this occassion made his landing on an area of the field which just happened to be 'soft', possibly due to recent heavy rain.
