Raikes Hall

RAIKES HALL: Man-carrying kite trials?

NOTES: Today the Raikes Hall site is near the centre of Blackpool, S of Church Street on the A583, south-east of Blackpool North railway station. In May 1902 Samuel F Cody “flew kites" from Raikes Hall. Bearing in mind that his first man-carrying kite flew in 1899 and seeing how very keen he was for the British Government/War Office to adopt his man-carrying kites, demonstrations being given to military ‘officials’ in 1901.

As pointed out elsewhere the development of a man-carrying kite probably had as much significance towards the advent of powered flight in the UK than the glider? It is surely not a coincidence that the first Bristol aircraft, (or should I say successful aircraft, was named 'The Boxkite'.
